NEGIN BOUZARI
PhD, Chemical Engineering
“The University of Waterloo is one of the top-rank universities in Canada in the Engineering field. As a student who wished to continue my graduate studies in Canada, the reputation of the University and the Department of Chemical Engineering, and the opportunity to work in a diverse community of researchers was the most pronounced incentive that encouraged me to apply for the graduate program.”
“While completing my undergrad in Waterloo, I realized that the most fun I had during my co-op work terms was doing the research component in Transportation Engineering. Naturally, I chose to attend grad school. Waterloo was the best option for me because of the seamless transition - I already established a connection with the class and met a professor that fit the ideal supervision style I was looking for.”
TINA LIN
MASc, Civil and Environmental Engineering
JACK DEGOOYER
MASc, Electrical and Computer Engineering
“One of the main reasons I chose Waterloo was for the Quantum Nanofabrication Center. The ability for individuals to create designs with the equipment there, thats something that is, I think, unrivaled across the country. Being a part of this IQC community, I’ve met a group of highly motivated interdisciplinary students that I’ve learned a lot from, not only for my courses, but also in a matter of self-growth.”
“I was having a really hard time finding something that fit with my undergraduate studies until I found this program. The faculty here is very willing to help students build their network, and I believe that network building aspect is really unique to Waterloo. An added bonus is that because of the smaller classes in the Management Sciences program, you really get to see the individual impact everyone has and the sense of community and fulfillment that it creates.”
JULIA DALESSANDRO
MASc, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering
KELLY ZHANG
PhD, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering
“Waterloo is an incredible place for AI and quantum computing. The amount of collaboration and inspiration by professors and researchers here, it really encouraged me to pursue my PhD and I don’t think I could experience that feeling anywhere else. Being here helped me dream bigger and push myself to solve those big problems that had high impact for the world.”
“The Masters of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (MBET) program has gone above and beyond my expectations. My favourite parts have been working to apply the material learned to my entrepreneurial venture, as well as the class projects that allow us to go outside the university. I have had the opportunity to work with a local start-up, and a larger more traditional company to help them become more innovative. I feel that if I wanted to start my own venture, I would have the tools to do so, however, those tools can easily be applied to help established companies act more innovatively as well. Through this degree, I have fallen in love with entrepreneurship and hope to continue researching at the doctoral degree level.”
HANNA KYOWSKI
MBET, Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business
BEN ECCLESTONE
PhD, Systems Design Engineering
“The opportunity that I’ve had working with this lab to develop and take projects and pursue them, I didn’t see this at other labs when I was applying for grad school. I think it really comes back to that environment and the culture of Waterloo that promotes an entrepreneurial mindset. My research in cancer diagnosis is unique to this lab and I believe that we have the opportunity here to make a positive impact in the world.”
“Waterloo’s Master architecture gives students the ability to discover their own path, narrow down their focus and really develop a thesis that is specific and often significant to the student. I see it also as a way to develop and discover your interests and figure out how you can engage meaningfully in the world through your specific skills and thinking. Within the graduate journey, there’s so much freedom to explore. During the summer of 2020, I spent a lot of time walking and biking the city, documenting changes occurring due to the pandemic, from signage to the removal of public amenities. It was such an interesting and yet stressful time in the research. For my thesis I looked at care theory and its relation to architectural practice. My work was heavily influenced by the progression of the pandemic which offered concrete scenarios to ground the theory. Out of the research launched a public art project called From Behind the Mask: A Community Quilt of COVID-19 Stories, which includes over 550 stories from individuals in the Tri-city community.”
