Waterloo Weather Station named for Ric Soulis

The University of Waterloo Weather Station celebrated its 25th anniversary with an official renaming ceremony this past year. The station was renamed the 'Eric D. (Ric) Soulis Memorial Weather Station.'

Ric Soulis a long-time professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Water Institute member, passed away suddenly in 2018. He was the original driving force behind the establishment of the weather station more than 25 years ago.

Remembering Emil O. Frind

Water Institute member Dr. Emil O. Frind, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Groundwater Modelling from the University of Waterloo’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022, at the age of 90.

Dr. Frind pioneered the field of quantitative groundwater science and was a leader in the development of modelling methodologies for groundwater processes.

Remembering Raymond L. Legge

Water Institute member Dr. Raymond L. Legge, Distinguished Professor Emeritus from the Department of Chemical Engineering passed away on April 15, 2023, at the age of 68.

His pioneering contributions advanced many applications of global import, from biosensors to environmental monitoring and remediation, to green bioprocesses and biological water treatment.

Remembering Colin I. Mayfield

Water Institute member Professor Emeritus Colin Ivor Mayfield from the Department of Biology passed away on May 3, 2022, at the age of 79.

Mayfield was one of Biology's pioneering faculty who helped establish aquatic microbiology, toxicology, bioremediation and groundwater microbiology as strengths at the University of Waterloo.
