Roy Brouwer (Executive Director) led a Water Institute delegation of faculty and graduate students to the United Nations 2023 Water Conference, the first of its kind in 46 years. The conference accelerated progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals through adoption of the Water Action Agenda.

RESEARCH CONFERENCE

A diverse group of academics, practitioners and policymakers from around the world attended the biennial Water Institute international research conference Water as a Foundation for Healthy Communities and Sustainable Livelihoods. Wide-ranging keynotes and panels explored the role of clean water and sanitation in child health and development, community-based approaches to achieving water and food security and water, gender and social inclusion.

PARTNERING WITH INDONESIA

TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE

In late-2022, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $15 million in funding for the University of Waterloo Faculties of Mathematics and Environment to implement the Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing and Ecosystem Sustainability (FINCAPES) project. FINCAPES is a multi-year initiative to provide technical assistance, capacity building and applied research support to help the Government of Indonesia and university partners to address key climate change adaptation and mitigation challenges and protect biodiversity.

INTERNATIONAL REPORTS

Over the last year, three Water Institute members made significant contributions to important international reports. Larry Swatuk’s (Environment, Enterprise and Development) work with the W12+ initiative was featured in the United Nations World Water Development Report 2023, Partnerships and cooperation for water. Maria Strack (Geography and Environmental Management) co-authored Global Peatlands Assessment – The State of the World's Peatlands released by the United Nations Environment Programme's Global Peatlands Initiative. Margaret Insley’s (Economics) work assessing the impact of environmental bonds on meeting environmental clean-up obligations by mining firms was featured in the European Commission’s Science for Environment Policy.
