CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF TRAINING FUTURE WATER LEADERS
Co-delivered by 11 departments and schools from across all six faculties, the Collaborative Water Program (CWP) is the most interdisciplinary water graduate program in Canada and has graduated over 400 students supervised by over 100 professors since its inception. In November 2023, the 10th anniversary of the CWP was celebrated with a celebration that attracted CWP alumni and students, CWP supervisors and employers. A highlight of the event was the program’s founding Director, Mark Servos awarding the inaugural CWP alumni achievement award to Maricor Arlos, Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta.
CWP WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR
The Water Institute was pleased to announce the appointment of Dustin Garrick (Environment, Resources and Sustainability and University Research Chair in Water and Development Policy) as Director of the Collaborative Water Program for a two-year term, effective January 1, 2024. Since 2011, Dustin has taught interdisciplinary water courses as part of the University of Oxford MSc in water science, policy and management, and he currently serves as the director of research for a European Commission funded doctoral training network, NEWAVE Next Water Governance.
WATERLEADERSHIP PROGRAM ENTERS NEW PHASE
The Water Institute offers WaterLeadership as a professional development program for students and post-doctoral researchers to improve their knowledge mobilization, communications, collaboration and leadership skills. In 2023-24, the revamped certificate program attracted a record number of participants.
VALUE OF WATER WEBINAR SERIES
In 2022, the Water Institute launched The Value of Water In Canada webinar series to highlight state-of-the-art water valuation practices and identify practitioners’ demand for water valuation information. To date, 25 webinars have been held attracting more than 2400 viewers.

CONNECTING WATER STUDENTS
The Society of the Water Institute Graduate Students (SWIGS) connects water students from across the University of Waterloo campus who embrace and value an interdisciplinary approach to learning. SWIGS expands networks and provides academic, social and community outreach programming, including Water and You where local primary school students are invited to submit artwork to express what water means to them.
