WHAT WE DO

THE PURPOSE OF THE WATER INSTITUTE IS TO:

RESEARCH

Advance and showcase interdisciplinary water research.

EDUCATE

Support and promote interdisciplinary perspectives in water-related education.

COLLABORATE

Strengthen global partnerships with leading water organizations and researchers.

In response to the growing scale and complexity of water issues both in Canada and around the world, the University of Waterloo established the Water Institute in 2009 to catalyze an on-campus network of excellence in water research, education and innovation. Water Institute researchers represent a wide breadth of disciplinary expertise with a membership of over 170 faculty members and 300 graduate students, who collectively span all six Waterloo academic faculties.

We support our faculty members by identifying research opportunities, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and establishing relationships with external stakeholders. The Water Institute actively promotes knowledge mobilization and exchange, bridging the gap between research and real-world application to ensure our work has a meaningful impact.

The Water Institute supports education and community engagement by coordinating the innovative Collaborative Water Program and hosting a variety of talks, symposia and outreach events each year.
