IMPACT AREA
ENVIRONMENT
The importance of understanding our environment has never been more apparent than it is today. Whether it’s indoors or out, our environments are critical to our well-being and livelihoods and affect us in profound ways.
Work shouldn’t hurt
More than 270,000 people get hurt at work in Canada each year, representing $2.68 billion in lost time and money. But as we embark on the fourth industrial revolution – based on interconnectivity, machine learning and real-time data – do we have the tools to predict which workspaces will cause injury before they actually do? Or if injury occurs, how can the digital environment help individuals make a successful return?
Food insecurity in the North
Food systems in northern Indigenous communities rely heavily on harvesting country foods from the land and waterways. Climate change exacerbates the availability of these foods, resulting in a shift toward a greater reliance on store-bought food and a link to increases in diet-related health issues, food insecurity, as well as socio-economic issues.
Practising regenerative tourism
There have always been challenges associated with tourism, including the elusiveness of sustainability and ‘overtourism,’ which negatively affects resident and visitor experiences. Now, because of a halt in tourism caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are also seeing ‘revenge’ tourism, whereby certain destinations are inundated with visitors they cannot sustain.
