WHAT WE DO

Given the increasing scale and complexity of water issues in Canada and around the world, the University of Waterloo established the Water Institute in 2009 to provide an on-campus network of excellence in water research, education and innovation. Water Institute researchers represent a wide breadth of disciplinary expertise with a membership of over 170 faculty members and 300 graduate students, who collectively span all six Waterloo academic faculties.

The purpose of the Water Institute:

RESEARCH

Promote, support and demonstrate interdisciplinary water research.

EDUCATE

Promote and support interdisciplinary perspectives in water-related education.

COLLABORATE

Strengthen global networks and partnerships with leading water organizations and researchers.

We support our faculty members by identifying research opportunities, facilitating the formation of interdisciplinary teams, building relationships with external stakeholders, supporting proposal development and executing projects. Importantly, the Water Institute promotes and supports knowledge mobilization and exchange to connect faculty with end users and to communicate the impact of the Waterloo’s research.

The Water Institute supports education and community engagement by co-ordinating the innovative Collaborative Water Program and organizing a variety of talks, symposia and community outreach events.
